Samoa: A South Pacific Paradise

Wednesday, December 26th, 2007

Located in the heart of the pacific - Samoa is a group of four main islands. The islands are situated about halfway between New Zealand and Hawaii. It’s a tropical climate with an average temperature of about 72 degrees Fahrenheit. This area is warm all year round but often rains between November and April.

One of the main attractions in Samoa is the crystal blue warm water. It’s so beautiful and teeming with all kinds of exotic fish life. If you are a nature lover then this is the ideal holiday destination for you. There are many kinds of exotic wildlife that cannot be found anywhere else in the world.

Samoa has a history rich with folklore and myth. The people speak one of the oldest forms of Polynesian and many speak English.

There are four main islands - but due to their closeness it’s pretty easy to get around. Ta’u, Ofu, Olesseg, and Tutuila. The islands also have good roads and you should consider renting a bike and cycling around the islands. It a great way to get around and the islands aren’t too big.

Divers, snorkelers, nature lovers, hikers, and surfers will find Samoa a paradise for their needs. There are some world class spots here. You might even catch Kelly Slater catching a quiet wave in this modest little surfing Mecca.

There are well over 800 species of exotic fish and 200 species of coral. The ocean is teeming with beauty and if you are an avid snorkeler you will want to visit Ofu. The beach sand is unique and super-fine coral sand.

The islands also have a national Park which is on Tau. You will need a guide to go into some of the more remote areas. Its relatively simple to find a guide, just ask at the National Park offices and be sure to bring good shoes because you are in for a walk! There are beautiful volcanic areas you can explore with your guide so be sure to ask.

Saua is considered to be the birthplace of Polynesian people and is well worth a visit. You can drive to Saua with a rented car.
Ok so you are convinced - a Samoan holiday is where you are headed - what kinds of things do you need to know about the people before you go?

They are a modest people and have a different attitude towards dress. It is respectful; to cover most of your body while you are there; dress modestly rather than risking offending the locals.

If you are lucky enough to be invited into a traditional home you need to sit down on the floor before you eat or talk. Cover your legs - it’s considered rude to leave your legs exposed.

Polynesians are typically very welcoming people. They know how to treat tourists. A large part of their economy relies on tourism and you are treated hospitably wherever you go. As with any destination it’s good to know a bit about what might be considered rude in different cultures.

Don’t take pictures without asking it’s considered a sign of respect to ask before taking pictures. Sunday in Samoa is considered to be a day of rest and this is strictly observed. Some activities, such as swimming, might not be allowed. Try to be sensitive to their beliefs and ask if in doubt. Villagers pray and if you are lucky you might even be invited to join in. If you enter a village during this prayer time, its called sa it is important to stop what you are doing and be quiet until it is finished.

If you are looking for a picturesque holiday with plenty to see and do; then this Samoan paradise is for you. It makes for a great holiday!]]>

Shopping On Bahamas’ Great Abaco Island

Thursday, December 13th, 2007

Great Abaco Island is home to many stores selling quality perfumes, ranging from fine, classic scents to fabulous island originals. Abaco Treasures, found right at the Marsh Harbor stop light, is one of these stores. In addition to an array of perfumes, Abaco Treasures also carries fine china, crystal and a selection of gift items. John Bull sells quality perfume and cosmetics, including products by Iman and Lancome, in addition to Rolex watches and fine jewelry. Solomon’s Mines, a duty-free shop, found right by the entrance to Abaco Beach Resort, carries high quality perfumes and cosmetics, in addition to better watches, including those by Tag Heuer and Patek Philippe and fine china.

Abaco Ceramics sells a broad range of pottery items, including their trademark design, white clay pots with blue fish. Iggy Biggy , easy to find, as it is housed in two bright pink cottages in Marsh Harbor on Queens Highway, offers a variety of island flavored clothing, sandals, jewelry and souvenir items. Island-style gifts, located in Royal harbor Village. Offers classic straw hats and woven baskets, in addition to household items, such as coasters and candlesticks ornamented with seashells and beautiful bed linens in quality natural fibers.

Java in Acabo is an enjoyable shopping experience. It’s meant to be a comfortable place, it’s meant for browsing. They even have a paperback book exchange. Shoppers can enjoy a good cup of coffee or an iced latte as they take their time in examining the broad array of beautiful, artistic craftwork. There are many useful and unique items to be found in this shop in the Royal Harbor Village. There are pieced quilts with artistically wrought patterns in vibrant, rich colors, and several styles of pillows. There are ceramics and hand carved goods. Some of these are for practical use and others are more artistic in nature, but all are beautifully crafted, a pleasure to see and a pleasure to touch. Johnston Studios Art Gallery is another good place to stop and browse for those in pursuit of art, though the works displayed and sold here are of a different nature. The gallery is a little less than an hour’s drive away from Marsh Harbor, and features original creations in bronze, which are the works of the Johnston’s. The gallery also carries a line of gift items and art prints.

Shopping on Great Acabo Island is a pleasant experience, particularly in the smaller establishments where there is the opportunity for interesting conversations with local residents. The range of products available throughout the island is immense, from internationally known brands and designers at bargain prices to one-of-a-kind items produced by locals. It’s a lovely way to spend the day.]]>

Should You Use Travel Guides?

Tuesday, December 11th, 2007

Let’s look at the San Francisco Bay Area which is another one of my favorite vacation spots and my family has many pleasant and happy memories of our visits to that area. Some areas are so familiar to tourists that it’s possible to view the attractions on your own. That allows you to take your time and go at your own pace. Fisherman’s Wharf and Pier39 are good examples. Just by walking a few blocks you can tour Aquarium of the Bay, take a cruise of San Francisco Bay, visit the world famous Ripley’s Believe It or Not Museum and spend some down time at the Riptide Arcade on Pier 39. The antique carousel is a beautiful site and an attraction for all ages.

If you’re going solo on this trip, you could consider buying a San Francisco CityPass. This special buy will give you tickets to five attractions, unlimited rides on the Cable Cars and an option ticket to use at the Legion of Honor or Academy of Science & Steinhart Aquarium. You are allowed nine days from the date you first start using your CityPass to visit each attraction and seven days for unlimited Cable Car rides.

Some attractions are worth having a tour guide for. If you go to Alcatraz Island, you have a choice of going solo, having a live tour guide or being guided by earphones which trigger the points of interest as you arrive at them. I would recommend the live tour guides. I have gone all three ways, and I received more enjoyment by someone telling me items of interest I know I had missed on previous tours.

Chinatown Walking Tours are tour guided must see. It gives you a behind the scenes look of colorful Chinatown. The tour covers, history, traditions of the local people and culture that you probably wouldn’t know or see by traveling alone. The lions at the entrance of Chinatown are awesome to see!

San Francisco also offers over 30 fun and free walking tours of San Francisco. For more information on these free tours, go to www.sfcityguides.org.

The same goes with Napa valley tours. It’s possible to drive to the area and go solo, but you will want to take guided tours of some of the vineyards and wine tasting rooms. If you are driving and just taking your leisurely time, I would recommend this way to see the beautiful sights of the wine country.

Another driving tour that is popular is the 17-mile drive down the coast. It winds around giving you glimpses of beautiful mansions and spectacular views. It will take you to Carmel and to Pebble Beach Golf Club.

One of my most popular tours is the Winchester Mystery House. It’s located in San Jose, an easy drive from San Francisco and Oakland and is worth the ticket cost. This unusual house can be toured many times and with each tour guide, you will learn something new about the eccentric Mrs. Winchester who believed the spirits told her to have the sound of continuing construction going on in her home to avoid death. This led to many quirks and funny sights in the house since Mrs. Winchester served as her own architect. She kept crews busy 24 hours a day, 365 days a year for many years. I loved the stairs leading to nowhere, and the built in magnifying glass in the window looking out over the garden. I’ve seen it four times, and will probably go back. Rumor has it, there was a wine cellar that was boarded up and sealed away. I wonder if it has been found yet!

You can go solo to attractions or take a guided tour. It’s your choice and you can choose whichever would give you the most memorable experience. I recommend both.]]>

Some Hot Tips on Charter Flights for Discount Travel

Saturday, November 24th, 2007

Almost anyone will probably agree that in a perfect world they’d be able to travel more. It is one of the most natural human desires to want to see different parts of the world and experience new things. And anyone who has traveled will probably agree that you don’t really appreciate or think about your home too much until you have the perspective of seeing how people live in other parts of the world.

The problem of course, is that travel has always been expensive. Although airfares have gotten cheaper over the years, they are still expensive enough that most people don’t fly regularly, and this is likely to remain the case. So unless you plan on suddenly getting rich, you’re going to have to come up with some discount travel solutions if you want to fly more, and a great thing to look into if you’re looking for a cheap flight are charter flights.

Charter flights are cheaper because they work on a different system than a started airline flight. A standard airline will have a set route between two cites: an airline will fly a certain amount a times a week between two cities, and this remains constant regardless of the amount of passengers. In other words normal airline routes function like bus routes, and sometimes there may only be a few people on the plane. It is this need to average out costs - to be able to afford all those times when the plane is a third full - that leads to high airfares.

Nearly any popular destination has charter flights going to it from major airports across the country. Also there are plenty of charters overseas to Europe, Asia or the United States. Charter flying is highly recommended to save money on many flights around the world.

A charter company can offer cheaper fares by working in a different fashion: they will charter an entire plane from an airline for a particular date and time, and thus receive a heavy discount on the cost. They can then pass some of this discount on to you by offering a lower per seat price for the flight. Most charter companies operate along very common routes during peak times - for example, sunny vacation spots during the winter.

Charter flights are much more reliable then other more radical ways of obtaining discount airfare, and fares will generally get cheaper as the departure date approaches. There is a certain amount of risk, however: a charter company can decide to cancel a flight if they haven’t sold enough tickets. Unlike a regular airline, which constantly has planes going to multiple destinations, the charter company may not be able o immediately put you on another plane. So instead of waiting a few hours it’s likely that if your charter flight is cancelled you’ll either be receiving a refund, or waiting at least a day or two for another charter - which of course can ruin any vacation.

That being said, there are many large and reliable charter companies, and charter flights — while not offering discounts as big as can be found through other discount travel methods - remain a reliable alternative to regular airfare. And if you’re flexible and willing to buy a ticket on short notice, you can find many excellent airfares from charter companies, making charter flights one of the more popular discount traveling methods.

Spa Vacations — Which Ones Are Best

Friday, November 23rd, 2007

There are spa vacations that include your particular hobby. You can book a spa vacation for a biking adventure, canoeing, kayaking, ski adventures, walking vacations, and horseback and golf vacations. If you are looking for just a relaxing spa retreat, you will find stress management retreats, weight loss vacations, spiritual retreats, and yoga vacations. There is a vacation spa package to fit nearly every possible need. These spa vacations are professionally managed and teach the guests healthy habits that they will take home with them.

Which spa is best for you? Here are some tips on how to find the perfect spa vacation.

Choose a spa vacation that fits your needs. If you’re looking for a spa to refresh your spirit, then choose a tranquil spot that will be most restful to you. That could be an oasis in the desert or a peaceful resort on the ocean. Choose one that is within your price range, so won’t add to your already high stress level.

Choose one that you feel you can get to or afford easily. Remember the purpose of a spa vacation is to relax and de-stress, not add more. There are stress management spa resorts that will teach you techniques to lower your stress level and give you a better quality of life. They may teach you yoga or meditation so you can more easily control your stress. Stress can make you sick in body and in spirit.

If you are looking to be just pampered there are spas that will do exactly that. All you need to do is go and do what they tell you. This spa will pamper you with facials, massages, and manicures, the whole works. That could be exactly what you need for this time of your life.

Do you feel the need to lose weight? Then a spa that will specialize in weight reduction should be your choice. Most of these spas will provide you with healthy foods, personal trainers, aerobics, nutritionist, and therapists. They will work with you to change your lifestyle to not only lose the weight but to keep it off once it’s gone. They will train you to make the right choices and continue your exercise routine when you return to your regular return. Sometimes it’s that little push that can give you the incentive to make permanent changes in your lifestyle for a healthier and happier you.

You may choose a spa vacation that will pamper you but also give you the opportunity to play nine holes of golf or take a private lesson. They offer all the same features of a regular spa but also include your favorite pastime to make it even more enjoyable.

Your choice might be a get back to nature spa. You can do that in some of the most beautiful spots in Southern California. The Spa Montage offers you a retreat on the ocean to reconnect with nature and you. It offers quiet, peaceful surroundings and therapeutic treatments.

You may choose to go to a relaxing spa by yourself, with a spouse or significant other or with a larger group. A spa retreat is a great idea for reunions and family gatherings, and corporate brainstorming sessions. Maybe you would love to go to a spa on your honeymoon. It could be one of the most restful trips you’ll ever take together.

Regardless of what spa vacation you choose. You will come away with a renewed sense of serenity and peace, and a new awareness of your body and how its surroundings affect it. So, go for it, whether you take a solo trip, a trip with a spouse or best friend, or meet as a group, you will find the spa experience to be a welcome break in this hectic, stressful world.]]>
